As this is my first review of 2019, I think I can still legitimately say “Happy New Year”. February is upon us and, whilst January always feels long, it’s nonetheless baffling that we’re already a month in.
If you’ve looked around the jobs market in Jan, you’ll have noticed it’s a nice temperature (in direct contrast to the weather).
We’ve seen the usual new-year ‘flurry’ – I’m never inclined to make any bold market assessments until activity turns into hiring decisions, but so far, it’s looked promising.
Looking inward, we’ve seen a 150% increase in new assignments (jobs we’re recruiting for) in January versus this time last year, which bodes nicely. But – as I’m always keen to point out – we’re a very small business and refrain from handling large volumes, so these stats aren’t valid at a macro level.
Anecdotally, however, I do get a sense most people are in the same boat. There’s considerable demand on projects – for architects, PMs, BAs, etc – and there’s definitely an uplift in activity at the senior end of the interim market.
We expect the interim market to be busy this year, and two big topics to dominate: changes to IR35, and a topic that begins with ‘B’ (which I’m sure will eventually make sense to us all…). Along with our partners, we will be helping clients and candidates to navigate the complexity and uncertainty that comes with both of these challenges.
So, January was cold but productive. Thanks again to Christ Ellett from Well Pharmacy for his excellent talk at our Transformation Stories breakfast session, and to our friends over in Shop Direct’s architecture team – especially Mark Jones – for being superb partners and hosts of the first Liverpool Architecture Meet-up, and for Dan Pass for being a legend on the night.
Here’s to a successful February, folks.
